No I would NOT pursue a "straight" guy if he's "flirting" with you.

I have been in the Army for over two years now, and for the most part I have enjoyed a lot aspects of it. I am currently stationed in Germany and love it, however, there are continuous conflicts between my personal life and professional life. While my peers have no problem whatsoever with me being gay, I still have to lead a double life for my superiors and others who are not in the know. The pay is good, the travel is great, and I love working in medicine, but I am still not sure of whether or not to extend my contract.

I would have to focus this grand question on you first. It's about what makes you simply happy right now in life.

When people ask questions regarding what they should do in life in terms of their current life choices... well it does present a chance for the person to find a way out of their current life through the means of another person's answer.

It does appear as if you are looking for a way out. And there's nothing wrong with doing just that.

The way I look at your life, you have seen and done what many others have never done, including working in Germany among other things, and you've created a career in medicine. You've done things up to this point in your life that you can be proud of, you've done your part in bringing yourself to a greater level of self worth.

I would like to think that if you have a way out to move on then you should take it. A person's life can either be a career based on one choice or their life can be a lifetime of choices that has therefore created a vast life full of varied experiences and choices. I personally ilke the vast life over a one choice life.

My main point of advice, to move to your next tackle in life. An area of life where being gay is not a "problem" and a place in the world where your career in medicine will still add a great contribution to life in general.

It seems like you enjoy being part of a collective whole that actually does something rather than being someone who stays behind and follows a routine that most likely benefits only themselves. If this collective whole only accepts a part of you then why stay with them?

There has to be another life out there for you that doesn't involve you leading a "double life". It seems your current job is a place where they just don't accept you as you are but more so of what you can do in terms of what you've been educated in. Now as to my thoughts on Gays in the military. I try not to group everyone who's gay to follow one path meaning everyone who is Gay and in the military should be looked at and discussed on an individual basis.

There are some who would rather push towards a sexless, relationshipless life in the military and focus on their work over anything else. Then there are those who want to have the best of both worlds and that is never attainable in the current military. There are some who wish to have sex behind closed doors but maintain a straight lifestyle out in the open.

All seem to have "problems" because they don't seem to be simply happy in their life choices and are basically living a censored life. Who wants to live a censored life? But some do and censor a part of them to move forward in life.

I do view many gays in the military as living a censored life. I could not personally do that but many can and continue to choose to do so. But eventually they leave to see what's out there and to "finally live free" as the person they are, a Gay man.

And to answer your final question, Yes, I do think people are "doing themselves a great disservice" by living behind a lie or a life that is different then the one they'd rather be living.

I personally believe there are a huge number of resources to "achieve their professional goals". Some believe the military is their only means in doing this but there are really many different paths to follow to get everyone down the same goals in life.

Military does teach certain aspects you can't learn anywhere else, that is true, but what price does it involve for you as a person to learn them at the expense of putting your personal life on hold. People are choosing a job/work/educated environment where a gay man can never be themselves. Some can handle that choice, other's can't and leave.

My final advice for anyone who feels trapped, having to protect their life from others, to just simply find A WAY OUT to a new better life because that better life does exist. The only way of obtaining it is to get out of your current situation and to pursue a new direction.

Do you believe you can help the Gay community or any community back home or around the world without the help of the military but just based on your career in medicine?

If you answered yes then maybe you should remove yourself and do something different.

If you answered no then maybe you do need to continue your personal sacrifices for an extended education in the military. If you really feel you can do your new life on your own then maybe you do need the help of the military to continue your change on the world.

But do come back to this question if you are at a crossroad in life and find yourself asking this same question again about leaving the military. Do you believe this is the only way on how you can make a difference, if only through the military?

The military will always need people like you but do you need them.
